History:
The Breakaway Lodge has been owned and operated by Young Life as a camp/retreat for the past 50 years. The Lodge was purchased in 1969 from the Episcopal Church of Oregon. The church had used the building as an educational retreat for young people. Originally known as The Convent of St. Margaret’s by the Sea, it was built in 1924 by the Society of Sisters of Holy Names. Each summer, the sisters traveled by train from Portland to Gearhart to stay at the retreat for a period of about ten days throughout the summer. The convent closed down each winter.
Located on the North Coast of Oregon, the lodge sits on a half-acre total acreage for this property, as the sale includes two tax lots is actually .92 acres, so just shy of an acre not a 1/2 acre in the middle of the small beach community of Gearhart. Access to the rugged and beautiful Oregon Coast and its sandy beaches is just a short walk away. The beach communities of Seaside and Cannon Beach are in close proximity and are used extensively by groups and for program activities. Accented by large decks and terraced gardens, the lodge has developed into a highly desirable retreat center. There is an outdoor, sand volleyball court, an outside basketball court, and an outdoor octoball courts – so 3, outdoor courts.

Please Join in the First Friday October 4th at our Downtown Bend Showroom (821 NW Wall St., Bend OR) from 5-8 PM to enjoy the artwork of Dee McBrien-Lee.
This event is sponsored by Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty and by hosted Julie More and Jared Chase.
Artist Bio “Painting is something I have done my entire life. It is Passion, Meditation, and Therapy. To create gives me an outlet for thoughts that keep me up at night or ideas and sights that bring me pleasure. A particular piece may be joyful or full of purpose, depending on the place I inhabit when the work is born. From the very beginning I love to use many layers of acrylic and mixed media to build a deep and interesting piece. Along the way I may add found objects or add textures to bring a richness into the work.”
Dee McBrien-Lee has been painting for as long as she can remember. She is best known for her abstracts and bird paintings which she creates with bold color and lots of texture, often mixing a variety of media for a unique look. Dee studied art at SUNY New Paltz in the 70’s and after graduation took a long hiatus from art. In the mid 2000’s she picked up where she had left off and shortly after began to study abstract painting, gradually moving away from the traditional landscape and western style of her past .
A favorite quote of McBrien-Lee, “I don’t start with a color order, but find the colors as I go” by Helen Frankenthaler is a mantra she lives by. While sometimes an abstract is just an abstract, this artist also explores subjects including current events or issues that we face on a daily basis. Dee has always loved getting fully immersed in her medium and paints with intention as well as just applying color to canvas and letting the mood and the piece take her where it may. Preferring bold color and line combined with many layers to create the finished pieces she seeks to create a mood or draw a reaction with her work and strives to create a dialog amongst her viewers. She loves to experiment with textures and while acrylic is her preferred medium, she works with just about everything in an exploratory and experimental way. The list of artists that have influenced her work is long but a sampling includes Klee, Diebenkorn, Klimt and Matisse.
McBrien-Lee was a founding Partner and former owner/artist at the Red Chair Gallery from 2010 through 2018. She has been juried in to various regional and local shows and her work can be found in private collections from coast to coast and in Europe. McBrien-Lee is currently represented by the Earthworks Gallery in Yachats, Oregon and the TClifton Gallery in Memphis, TN. As of May 1, 2019 McBrien-Lee’s work can be found at Tumalo Art Company in the Old Mill District of Bend, OR where she is a Member Artist.
