Cascade Sotheby’s Brokers Sponsor Annual Bend Beer Chase

BEND, OR – The Beer Chase concept was conceived in the back of a 12-passenger van at 3am while the Cascade Relays staff was running the Bourbon Chase overnight relay in Kentucky in 2013. After completing a 6-mile leg to finish at Wild Turkey at 2am, Founder Scott Douglass was asked by a Distillery representative if he wanted a shot of Wild Turkey 101. Having just finished the leg and still on an endorphin rush, Scott replied, “I didn’t fly out to Kentucky to not shoot that Turkey!” Still choking 30 minutes later in the back of the van, a stroke of brilliance came to mind that Beer and running go together much better after a long run. The idea of running a one-day relay along the Bend Ale Trail to celebrate and sample the amazing craft breweries of Central Oregon was conceived and the Bend Beer Chase was born in October 2014.

The Bend Beer Chase, itself, is a unique, one “beer relay” featuring the region’s best brews! The BBC is a one-day six-person running relay of approximately 50 miles, consisting of 12 legs of varying distance (4-8 miles per leg). The course starts from Bend, travels to Redmond, to Sisters and back to finish in Bend, traversing the spectacular scenery of Central Oregon. Individuals can choose to only do the Keg Leg portion of the race if they do not wish to complete the relay portion. Each time you exchange at a brewery, you will have the option to enjoy a 3-4 oz sample of beer.

Perhaps the most unique aspect of a relay like the Bend Beer Chase is the team aspect of running an event like this provides. Running is often a solitary sport, but in a relay, it’s all about your team. After the relay portion of the race then teams have the opportunity to run together through some of Bend’s best breweries. Teams get in to the spirit by creating elaborate team names and themes, wearing matching outfits, participating in contests, having spontaneous dance parties, cheering on fellow runners, and decorating their vans. The Bend Beer Chase is a race, a celebration, and a vacation all wrapped up in one day of running.

Stephanie Ruiz and Jordan Grandlund, Brokers with Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty, are 4th year sponsors of the relay. Ruiz says “The Ruiz + Grandlund team at Cascade Sotheby’s is a proud sponsor of Cascade Relays and the Bend Beer Chase. Jordan and I are extremely passionate in our support of friends and local small businesses, especially when there is a charitable component involved.” View Stephanie Ruiz’ listings. One day, one van, six friends, twelve legs, 12-20 craft breweries hosting exchange points where runners sample their amazing craft. Seriously, what could be better? The countdown to race day is on – June 2!

Custom Home in Crooked River Ranch Showcases its Stunning Setting

TERREBONE, OR – In the Summer of 2011, David and Cheryl Keyston were living in Carmel when they took a road trip through the Pacific Northwest and visited friends at Crooked River Ranch. The next morning, they hopped in the car, headed for Route 97 and their next stop: Idaho. “We were just passing through,” said Cheryl. However, five minutes down the road, they caught sight of an intriguing landscape out the window, so David suggested they stop and take a closer look. “We pulled up to the cliff and got out of the car, and just saw this extraordinary vista to the left and to the right,” Cheryl recalled. “David said, ‘It’s like we’re on the Grand Canyon.’”

After appreciating the sight for a few moments, they got back behind the wheel, only to pass a “For Sale” sign seconds later. They soon learned: 6.8 untouched acres overlooking Crooked River Gorge were available for purchase. The incredible view that they had just been appreciating could be theirs every day. “I felt very inspired,” said Cheryl. “You couldn’t take it all in—seeing the eagles flying by and hearing the water—and not think, what would it be like to live here?”

Within a month, the couple purchased the land. Then they tapped their creative backgrounds—Cheryl was a fashion designer and David an architecture enthusiast—to design a home that would suit the beautiful setting. First, this meant positioning the house so that it would maximize the incredible views. “When we sited the property, we wanted to make sure that we could take advantage of the best perspective of the river as well as Smith Rock and Monkey Face,” said Cheryl. “We got it as close to the rim as we could, legally.”

Next, they took the natural setting as inspiration for the building’s overall form. “We just decided to follow nature’s path,” said Cheryl. From the birds’ flight patterns overhead to the cliffs on the horizon, the couple noticed, “Everything is horizontal here,” said David. Therefore, they decided to keep the home a single-level, and then strove to repeat that horizontality in subtle ways in the interior. For instance, all the Pella windows sport horizontal mullions, and each electrical outlet cover plate was positioned parallel to the baseboards.

Past the custom mahogany front door, every room is punctuated with artistic detail without sacrificing the necessary function. For instance, the colors and veining of the countertops in the kitchen mimic the landscape just outside the windows, while the durable quartzite makes meal prep hassle-free. In the living room, a handcrafted metal screen fabricated by local artist Andrew Wachs borders the fireplace and artfully hides the stereo and television. Four opaque glass doors from Italy are etched with natural scenes, letting light flow throughout the home while also ensuring privacy. A textural plaster coating on all the walls forms thoughtful niches for displaying art and collectibles in every room. In the principle bathroom, the tile floor received inset area “rugs” composed of river rock, an artful feature that also feels good underfoot.

The couple’s contractor, Scot Fetrow, built the house in just ten months while upholding his clients’ dedication to detail. “They made a lot of neat choices that came together really well,” said Fetrow. Under his guidance, even the baseboard received special treatment, as he made sure to round out the corners for seamless joins. “I also made sure to carry the grain around the corner,” he explained. Fetrow brought in several skilled craftspeople to best achieve the couple’s vision. This included Bend’s Cement Elegance, which fabricated several custom counters throughout the home.

Outside, the couple specified an 850-square-foot patio and four Cumaru hardwood decks for ideal indoor-outdoor flow. “It’s a really relaxing place to entertain as well as enjoy the afternoon sun,” said David. Additionally, David strived to ensure the home would use fewer natural resources throughout its lifetime. “While this home is technically not LEED-certified, I followed almost every single protocol for that certification,” he said. Fetrow built the walls at “double thickness,” in order to up the insulation value. The home is also prepped to support a future solar panel array. A hybrid hot water heater and a high-efficiency heat pump and furnace ensure energy saving.
Ultimately, the Keystons created a home that melds with the landscape to form a truly inspiring retreat. “You just never get tired of it here,” said David. Historic Oregon Theaters Continue to Thrive

Revel in the glamour of three restored theaters that harken back to an era when gloves were worn for style over warmth.
Liberty Theatre | Astoria

1920s decorative architectural glamour lives on in Astoria. The rehabilitation of Liberty Theatre, a former motion picture “palace” built during the golden age of the big screen, has brought hundreds of thousands of visitors and residents to downtown Astoria since reopening in 2005. Within the gilded walls, quality performing arts productions provide culturally rich events across a variety of disciplines in the downtown venue. Up coming performances include a Texas Tribute to ZZ Top, The Oregon Brass Quintet, Randy Linder’s Creedence Clearwater Revival Tribute and the Astoria Music Festival. For tickets, go to LIBERTYASTORIA.ORG.
Tower Theatre | Bend

It was built in just three months in 1940 but the historic Tower Theatre’s presence in downtown Bend has stood the test of time. Adding character to the arts community, the Tower hosts world-class acts. Up coming performances include Westside Village ‘School of Rock’, Animal House movie screening and The Stray Cats’ Lee Rocker. For tickets, go to TOWERTHEATRE.ORG.
Schnitzer Concert Hall | Portland

Approximately 6,000 theatrical lights illuminate the famed “Portland” marquee on Broadway in downtown Portland outside the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, a fully-restored landmark building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic Italian Renaissance-style theater is home to the last of the grand stages that once graced the arts-centric street, though the theater—which opened in 1928 and ran under various names as a movie theatre until 1972—was always the most impressive. Crystal chandeliers and marble structural details bring old world charm to the building’s multiple lobbies. Inside the auditorium, rows of seats sweep six stories above the stage in a design that showcases acoustic mastery during the musical performances that take place here. Up coming performances include Joshua Bell, Bill Nye ‘The Science Guy’, Audra McDonald and Bon Iver. For tickets, go to ARLENESCHNITZER.ORG.

Cascade Sotheby’s – Sisters Brokers Donate Trees

SISTERS, OR – In celebration of National Arbor Day, the Sisters brokerage team of Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty delivered 80 pine seedlings to Sisters Elementary School. The donation, on May 2, was on behalf of the kindergarten and one 4th grade class. On hand to present the trees were Patty Cardoni (Principal Broker and Manager of Cascade Sotheby’s Farm, Ranch & Vineyards Division), Mark Morzov, Ellen Wood and Suzanne Carvlin, Brokers with the local Sisters office.

Arbor Day is an annual observance that celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. In fact, the tree has appeared throughout history and literature as the symbol of life. As a formal holiday, it was first observed as far back as 1872. Pioneer Julius Sterling Morton, editor of Nebraska’s first newspaper utilized his forum to profess his enthusiasm for trees. Morton’s ideas about environmental stewardship encouraged everyone to set aside a specific day to plant trees. Morton was quoted as saying, “The cultivation of flowers and trees is the cultivation of the good, the beautiful and the ennobling in man, and for one, I wish to see this culture become universal.” Let’s get together and celebrate the importance of trees!

The trees, 14″ Ponderosa Pine saplings, were purchased from the Arbor Day Foundation for the children to plant in their backyards with their families. Mylee Card, both a teacher, as well as the mom, of a student attending Sisters Elementary School offered high praise for the donation, “Thank you so much for the trees yesterday! The kids were so excited! My son being one of them, had it planted by the time I got home, in the perfect spot!”
