Alberta Arts District Neighborhood Portland, Oregon

The Alberta Arts District revolves around Alberta Street, a bustling area with unique shops, unforgettable restaurants, and community-centered art galleries. Although the neighborhood was once full of abandoned stores and houses, it’s now one of the most popular places for shopping and dining in Portland.
Walking, shopping, and eating have always been at the heart of the Alberta Arts community. The street was originally part of a farming town called Albina, which became connected to downtown Portland by streetcar in 1903.
This new streetcar transformed the little town into a vibrant suburb and commercial district. German and Russian immigrants quickly filled the new houses built on Albina’s pastures and orchards. Some of these immigrants commuted into Portland for work, while others started businesses along Alberta Street.
The new stores and restaurants on Alberta Street thrived on the pedestrian traffic from the streetcars. The economy of the community revolved around walking. Even the business owners on Alberta lived above their stores, creating a mix of residential and commercial life.
Unfortunately, Portland’s streetcar system didn’t last for long. By the late 1940s, cars had become the dominant mode of transportation. Commuters were choosing to drive and shop at the large supermarkets and stores along the highway rather than visit their local shops.
Adapting to this change, Portland stopped its streetcar service. Public transportation was limited to buses along different routes. The sidewalks were no longer crowded with shoppers and commuters, and businesses along streets like Alberta suffered and closed. Many residents moved away, and the remaining population was poor and plagued with crime.
At its lowest point, about a third of the homes and buildings around Alberta Street were abandoned. The area continued to decline until the 1990s, when the community rallied to save their neighborhood. Local non-profits and organizations worked with public agencies to create programs that addressed crime, low-income housing, and economic development.
Focusing on the community’s strengths and potential, locals began to refer to their neighborhood as the “Alberta Arts District.” They also created an art walk to highlight and support the artists in their community. This support, along with inexpensive rent, drew more and more artists to the area. Public art, murals, and beautification projects soon replaced the ugliness of the boarded-up buildings.
After only five years, the neighborhood was turning around. Property values were rising quickly as Portlanders fell in love with the artistic vibe of the neighborhood. Initiatives like the art walk were not only growing in popularity—they were becoming big events that boosted the local economy.
Now, on the last Thursday of every month, Alberta transforms into a fantastic street fair with music, dancing, food, crafts, and street performers. Even in the cold winter months, you can still experience the fair inside the galleries and shops on the street.
The Alberta Arts District has truly been revitalized. Buildings that were once closed and abandoned have been reopened and repurposed. For example, the Alberta Rose Theater was closed in 1978 after showing films for 50 years. The theater’s incredible acoustics and lovely atmosphere were rediscovered in the late nineties, as the neighborhood was picking up. Now, it’s opened its doors once again for acoustic concerts, live performances, and art house films.
In addition to art-centered shops and galleries, the Alberta Arts District has also become known for its excellent dining options. You can eat brunch at a French bakery-café (Petite Provence), try Indian street food for lunch (Bollywood Theater), grab dinner at a Haitian roadside stand (Jouk Lik Jou), and finish off the day with cocktails at a vegan lounge (The Bye and Bye). These choices are just a small sampling of the flavors available on Alberta Street.
With great food, artistic shops, and beautiful homes, it’s no surprise that the Alberta Arts District has become a popular neighborhood to live in. If you’re looking to join a community of artists, creative thinkers, and open-minded individuals, this Portland neighborhood might be for you.

Yachats, Oregon: Community Features and Things to Do

Nicknamed the “gem of the Oregon Coast,” Yachats is a special place to own a home. Nestled between the ocean and forest, the town has natural beauty on every side. It has a warm, welcoming community with fun-loving residents and many quirky, locally-owned businesses. It’s small enough for everyone to remember your name, yet large enough for there to be regular festivals and events to enjoy.
Although people lived in the Yachats area long before the town was officially established, its fame didn’t really take off until the early 20th century. This was partly because the area was difficult to reach by car. Traveling on the local dirt roads was challenging or impossible in rainy weather, and even after the roads were macadamized, the trip was long.
Still, Yachats was charming enough to draw tourists already in 1905, when the first hotel was built in the town. The number of tourists visiting the community only grew after that. By the time the Roosevelt Memorial Highway (now called Highway 101) reached Yachats in 1931, the town was known for its beauty.
Tourism is now the main industry in Yachats. The town offers so much to enjoy that it’s become a favorite destination even for well-seasoned travelers like Arthur Frommer. It’s not only a perfect place to visit, though. Residents of Yachats are just as enthusiastic about the local events and unique natural beauty surrounding the town.

Yachats la de da Parade

This carefree parade is the way Yachats celebrates the Fourth of July. There’s a wide variety of participants, including belly dancers, an umbrella drill team, and a fire truck with Dalmatian miniature goats. Then, after the parade, there’s a race with rubber ducks in the Yachats estuary. Finally, at the end of the day, the city launches an incredible fireworks display over the ocean.

Music Festivals

Yachats is home to many music lovers. That’s why there’s a music festival both in July and November. For the summer festival, some of the best classical musicians in the world come together to play four concerts in the weekend. Then, in November, the Yachats Celtic Music Festival takes over the town. During this festival weekend, you can listen to performances by world-class Celtic musicians from Scotland, Ireland, Canada, and the United States. You can also participate in a variety of workshops and learn how to do a Celtic dance or play a Celtic instrument like the Bodhran.

Yachats Village Mushroom Festival

Mushrooms are so popular in Yachats that they’ve created a festival just to celebrate everything related to mushrooms. Every October, experts in mycology come to the town to give presentations, put up exhibits, and lead walks in the forest. You can also take part in a workshop about growing mushrooms for cooking, or enjoy delicious mushroom-themed dishes at the restaurants in Yachats.

Hiking Trails

The coast around Yachats is stunning. The area was once covered in lava, which has created a shoreline of black basalt rock. Although you won’t find a lot of sand, there are many tide pools, crashing waves, and unusual rock formations like Thor’s Well and Devil’s Churn. Here are some of the best trails for seeing the unique natural beauty around Yachats.

804 Trail

This simple trail was likely a tribal footpath years ago. It runs along the western side of Yachats and passes by three state parks, the downtown area, and the beautiful rocky shoreline.

Amanda Trail

At the end of the 804 Trail, you can pick up this somewhat difficult 3.7-mile hike. It’ll bring you all the way to Cape Perpetua, with breathtaking viewpoints along the way.

Ya’Xaik Trail

For a shorter hike, take this 1.15-mile trail off of Highway 101. It wanders through a pretty forest and is connected to the Gerdemann Botanic Preserve, a lovely 3.5-acre garden of rhododendrons, old-growth trees, and exotic plants.

Food and Drink

Yachats is not only a great place for hiking and having fun, but also for eating out. Even with a relatively small population, Yachats has been able to keep up a good variety of eateries thanks to its strong tourism industry. Here are some places you might want to visit more than once.

To get the best baked goods at this café and bakery, make sure you show up early! Otherwise, you might miss out on their excellent Hippie Bread or Celestial Snail tarts.

Yachats Brewing

This brew pub is new to Yachats, but it already has several excellent beers and a strong following. Besides serving good food and locally-raised meat, the pub is also a great, cozy place to hang out with friends.

Drift Inn

This historic eatery is all about the atmosphere. There’s live music every evening, and the ceiling is covered in artistic, homemade umbrellas (all for sale).

The Oregon Coast is known for its seafood, and this fisherman-run joint is no exception. You can get fresh fish and chips with bottomless tartar sauce, or buy a few pounds of fresh seafood to cook at home.

Beaverton, Oregon History, Neighborhood, and Real Estate

Beaverton is a thriving urban town in the scenic Tualatin Valley in the Portland Metro area. Named after the many beaver dams in the area, the town is surrounded by woodlands, open-range grasslands, and beautiful waterways, yet also has easy access to urban amenities in Portland. This balance between nature and city life is what attracts many residents to Beaverton.


For over a century, the town was dependent on the forest for its economy. Its first sawmill was built in 1848, a year after the first settlers arrived in Beaverton. This sawmill shipped wood products to Portland using Canyon Road, which was then just a rocky dirt trail that was almost impassable in bad weather.
Realizing the need for a better road, the territorial government created a company to build plank roads along Canyon Road. This first endeavor was mismanaged and poorly funded, and the project came to a standstill. Fortunately, a few years later, a group of businessmen took up the project once more. They were better funded this time and completed “The Great Plank Road” in 1860, using tolls to make a profit.
This road helped to boost the economic success of Beaverton. Trade with Portland was much easier, making local industries more prosperous. However, the plank road still wasn’t entirely reliable. The wooden planks soon began to deteriorate, and the town’s residents began to look for a more enduring connection with the city.
One option was to macadamize the road, but the residents set their sights even higher. They wanted to bring the railroad to Beaverton. Hoping to realize this goal, a group of residents laid out the town, showing that it was more than just a home for beavers.
And they were successful: the railroad came to Beaverton in 1868, spurring the community’s growth. The town was officially incorporated in 1893 with 400 residents, and it’s only grown larger and more successful since then.


Now, Beaverton has more than 90,000 residents and is no longer dependent on wood products or the railroad. Instead, it’s home to companies like Nike and is connected to Portland via light rail.

Nevertheless, despite these changes, the town has preserved its natural beauty. It has over 100 parks, 30 miles of hiking trails, 25 miles of bike paths, and 1,000 acres of green space. No matter where you live in Beaverton, you can reach a park within a half mile.
In addition to this wealth of natural scenery, Beaverton has maintained its community spirit through the years. Community events are regularly organized, from festivals and parades to markets and concerts.
The oldest event is the Beaverton Celebration Parade, which began in 1957. It’s since grown to include over 100 local entries, from festive floats to upbeat marching bands, all kicked off with a fun run in the morning.
Summer and autumn are especially active seasons in Beaverton. You can watch an outdoor movie during Flicks by the Fountain, go to public concert every third Thursday, and enjoy venders, food, and activities during the Broadway Street Festival. You might even find a local artist or artwork you love during BAM!, the town’s four-day art sale.
Lately, the community has also begun to host events that celebrate cultural diversity. For example, the town’s International Celebration showcases the music, dance, food, and art of many cultures. You can also watch dances from different countries during Ten Tiny Dances, or go to the Beaverton Night Market, inspired by the night markets found internationally. There’s even a German Holiday Market and Tree Lighting in December.
These intercultural events have been successful partly because the town has an active international population, rooted in its two international schools. Instead of splitting the community, this diversity has only enriched it, showing that Beaverton is not only a beautiful community, but also a welcoming one.

Concordia Neighborhood Portland, Oregon

The Concordia neighborhood is becoming one of Portland’s most popular neighborhoods to live in. For many years, it was known only for its abandoned and run-down buildings. However, thanks to urban renewal efforts, it’s become a diverse, walkable community with lovely homes, parks, and part of one of the city’s main cultural hubs, the Alberta Arts District.

The community also includes Concordia University, which has a nice campus and a large athletics complex. The athletics complex is one the university’s main attractions. It houses a stadium, gymnasium, hockey arena, fitness gym and outdoor playing fields. These facilities aren’t just limited to students, either. Members of the public can get a membership, too, or rent the stadium, gymnasium or playing fields for their own events.
Concordia University has always been a big part of the neighborhood. It was one of the community’s first establishments and eventually became its namesake. Founded in 1905, the university was initially a four-year academy that trained pastors and teachers for the regional Lutheran Church. It became a junior college in 1950, a four-year college in 1977, and then a full-fledged university in 1997.
The Concordia neighborhood, like the University, also grew and changed dramatically throughout the 20th century. In the early 1900s, it was still on the edge of Portland. The city was growing rapidly, though, and the neighborhood was soon flourishing with commuters and modest homes.
Many of these new residents were drawn to the area because of the shopping and public transportation along Alberta Street. At that time, Portland had an efficient streetcar system. Urban commuters and shoppers depended on these streetcars to travel between the city center and outlying neighborhoods like Concordia.
Although streetcars didn’t go far into Concordia, an important streetcar route went along its border on Alberta Street. Businesses thrived along this route, as pedestrians regularly went by the shop windows and restaurants. Alberta Street was growing into a vibrant commercial district, bringing customers and residents to Concordia.
However, in the 1940s, the area experienced an economic downturn. Interstate Avenue had been opened to the west, diverting traffic away from the neighborhood. Instead of shopping at local businesses, commuters were starting to visit large stores and supermarkets along Interstate Avenue.
As a final blow, streetcar service ended along Alberta Street in 1948. Many local businesses were forced to close, and property value plummeted.
For decades, Concordia faced a lot of hardship, that is until urban renewal efforts brought attention and business to Alberta Street once again. In the 1990s, the community had come together and created plans for reviving the neighborhood. They wanted to improve public transportation, create room for cyclists and pedestrians, and turn Alberta Street into a thriving cultural district.
Their investment paid off. Property value has gone up dramatically since then, as the neighborhood has only grown in popularity. Rundown historic homes have been rediscovered and refurbished, and empty buildings have been turned into great restaurants, shops, and art galleries.
The Kennedy School is a prime example of this urban renewal. Built in 1915 as John D. Kennedy Elementary School, the building was initially praised for its interesting architecture. However, as the neighborhood deteriorated, the school was abandoned.
Then, in the 1990s, a Portland-based hotel and pub group McMenamins discovered, bought, and renovated the school. Now, the previous school is an incredible event space with a brewery, movie theater, bar, soaking tub, and courtyard restaurant, as well as 57 classroom-turned-guestrooms.
While much of Concordia has been rediscovered and revived, you can still find homes that are hidden gems. For example, this 3-bedroom home built in 1949 has beautiful hardwood floors and a great layout, and it’s only two blocks away from McMenamins!
