First Friday in Bend with Rod Frederick

We are thrilled to be displaying the work of Rod Frederick for January’s First Friday event in Bend, OR. Wildlife painter Rod Frederick is a native Oregonian, born in Salem and raised mostly in the Portland area. Coming from a family of outdoor enthusiasts, much time was spent hiking and camping throughout the lush Pacific Northwest. Art and creativity were also very important to the family so it was a natural step for Rod to attend Willamette University and graduate with a degree in art and a minor in biology. After college, a constant curiosity of the bigger world led him to expand outside of the Northwest. The quest for new painting subjects has taken Rod on adventures in Central and South America as well as Europe and Africa.

Travel is exciting but I always feel at home in the mountains of the Northwest. Central Oregon has been my home since 1987 and the inspiration never stops.

In a “traditional realist” style, Rod typically paints with oils on Belgian linen. He often applies thin glazes on top of bolder forms to achieve a play of light, depth, and atmosphere. His paintings have been featured in several books including “Return Of The Peregrine,” “Owls Of North America,” and “The Best Of Wildlife Art.” His work has been chosen for inclusion in Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum’s annual “Birds In Art” exhibition over a dozen times. Recently Rod’s painting of a Kit Fox was selected by Oregon Department Of Fish and Wildlife as the 2013 Habitat Stamp image. Rod’s paintings have been published as limited edition prints by The Greenwich Workshop since 1983.

Bend Area Named “Boomtown”

The top ten boomtowns of 2015 were recently named by SmartAsset, a personal finance technology company headquartered in New York. Metrics used to determine boomtowns were the rate at which people moved to the city, minus the residents who left, as well as GDP growth and unemployment rates. After analyzing 575 cities in the United States, Bend, Oregon was ranked number four.
The study says, “everyone wants to live in Bend. Or at least, a lot of people do,” and according to the U.S. Census Bureau data, “the city’s net migration rate is 2.2%, the highest in the country.” To those who live in Bend, or have ever had the chance to visit, they know the beautiful scenery and outdoor activities are a huge draw. Couple that with the quality of life and city’s strong economy and you can understand why 3,600 more people moved to Bend in 2014 than those who left.
Rounding out the top three boomtowns on the list are: Loveland, Colorado; Richardson, Texas and McKinney, Texas. Details on the study, including full methodology and rankings, can be found here.

About the brokers

I was born and raised here on the North Oregon coast. I grew up in Cannon Beach and Neahkahnie. After graduating from the University of Oregon and Clark Honors College with a B.A. in Spanish, I returned to Cannon Beach with my husband and we spent ten years building his business, starting our family, and involving ourselves in the community. Although we have enjoyed extensive travel, as well as six years living in Santa Cruz, California recently, the incredible natural beauty and wonderful communities of the Oregon coast have always lured us home. I now live in wonderful Manzanita with my husband, daughter, and our dog. We enjoy (year ‘round!) adventures outdoors: walking the beaches, hiking the trails, boating, assisting with my daughter’s equestrian competitions, Stand Up Paddling the bays, and just being surrounded by the bounty of this incredible corner of the world. My entire life has been steeped in art, architecture, and building. Interest in the aesthetics of home design coupled with my love of the land of this area drew me to a career in Real Estate. I have deep rooted knowledge of this area, including smaller details such as microclimates and community nuances. As your Real Estate Broker, I offer you the extensive marketing value of working in The Sotheby’s International Realty brand along side my personal, local service and expertise. I would love to help you realize your dream here on the North Oregon coast.

The day I graduated from Portland State in ‘91, I moved to Cannon Beach. Together with my amazing wife Meadow, who I proposed to in Manzanita, we started our family and business careers. I began working in construction and became a General Contractor building custom homes for Meadow’s father, Tom Ayres, an architect in Neahkahnie/Manzanita. My hobby at the time was the recreational designing and manufacturing of custom surfboards. The board hobby took off, became a business, and I have pursued it for the last 20+ years. Meadow and I founded and ran a surf start up for a decade. We were then invited to move to Santa Cruz, California to join a top international surf company. I worked between Santa Cruz, Shenzhen, and Bangkok. When that company was acquired, I was recruited to join an Australian competitor and work remotely between the US, Australia, Thailand, China and Taiwan. Together, with a small team, we grew the Australian company to be the largest international manufacturer and distributor of surfboards globally. During that time, with the opportunity to work remotely from any location, we chose to come home and base from Manzanita. Manzanita is truly a wonderful place to live. I have since retired from international action sports with the exception of some consulting work, and now work along side Meadow , a successful Manzanita and Neahkahnie broker, in our wonderful home town. Together, Meadow and I offer a unique perspective on home ownership and the benefits of living in Manzanita and Neahkahnie. With our experience in business, travel and this beautiful area, we are in a unique position to assist with your transactions.

11159 SW Riverwood Road – Dunthorpe

Lisa Mehlhoff presents our Extraordinary Home of the Day, located at 11159 SW Riverwood Road in Portland, Oregon. This property is a rare opportunity to build on the coveted Riverwood street in Dunthorpe. You’ll get lost in the .73 acre tranquil setting of mature trees that has been thoughtfully landscaped with native vegetation. This secluded lot features a stunning pond, natural stream and a three-car garage with adjacent studio still on the property; a must see to begin your dream home. For more information, please contact Lisa Mehlhoff at 503.490.4888. MLS #15299485.

About the community

Although officially an unincorporated area, Dunthorpe is usually treated as another of Portland’s neighborhoods or outlying suburbs. Dunthorpe is mostly hemmed in by the Willamette River and by busy Highway 43, stretching from Lake Oswego to the south and Portland to the north. Just like its neighbor LO, Dunthorpe is an affluent community with large, beautiful houses and wild areas. Its homes and streets sit half in Clackamas County and half in Multnomah County, and its properties are zoned to mandate half-acre lot size at a minimum. Dunthorpe contains within its embrace Lewis & Clark College and Law School as well as gorgeous, rambling Tyron Creek State Natural Area. Technically a state park, Tryon Creek boasts miles of wilderness trails for hikers, cyclists and horseback riders, and is home to wildlife such as coyotes, brush rabbits, raccoons and endangered salamanders.
Dunthorpe is situated on the Willamette River’s west side, on 13 acres of which sits the Elk Rock Gardens of the Bishop’s Close. Created at the turn of the century by a Scottish couple, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kerr, and designed by Central Park architect Frederick Law Olmstead, the garden now showcases curated paths, magnolia trees, streams, rock gardens, rhododendrons and much more. Although the area originally only contained an elementary school, it now provides Kindergarten through 12th grade education for its inhabitants. Located next to the river, Dunthorpe is convenient to many water sports as well as walking along accessible parts of the waterfront.

About the broker

I am a Pacific Northwest native, having lived in the area my entire life, except for the few fun, but short, years I lived in Pullman, Washington while earning my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from WSU. I then returned and worked as an educator, teaching eighth grade science for over ten years. Along the way I earned my Master’s Degree in Educational Technology.
Not only am I professional, highly organized and conscientious, I strive to provide outstanding customer service. I am always responsive to my clients’ needs and go above and beyond what is expected of the average real estate agent. I bring the same passion to real estate that I brought to teaching our community’s children. I am an expert in the Portland area and possess a wealth of knowledge and expertise about buying and selling real estate here. I know the many different neighborhoods and their respective characters.
I can help my clients find the neighborhood that fits their wants as well as their needs. I pay attention to the changes being made in the different neighborhoods, from the opening of a great new restaurant to a developer’s proposal for a variance to construct multifamily units in a primarily detached single family neighborhood. You need someone you can trust for up-to-date information. I am that person, and I am eager to serve you.

Third Thursday with Lynne Wintermute

We are excited to have artist Lynne Wintermute for Lake Oswego’s Third Thursday. As a native Oregonian, Lynne has always appreciated the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. She is a Portland local, educated at Linfield College and the Museum Art School and has studied with many local and national artists over the years, continuing to perfect her craft.
Wintermute’s inspiration is all around her, from ocean sunsets to the forest and rivers; the colors of Oregon come through with passion, in her paintings. Preferring to work on larger canvases or board surfaces, Lynne paints primarily  with acrylic on canvas, using hundreds of layers of paint in each piece. She employs an alcohol dissolve technique, to pull color and texture from under layers. While most of her work is on commission, Lynne’s pieces can be seen at galleries and shows throughout the Northwest.

December 17th, 4-7pm

Please join us Thursday, December 17th from 4-7PM at our Lake Oswego office in Lake View Village (310 N. State Street) for art, live music, wine and appetizers! Lucky Me, Mela! and Sur La Table will also be hosting wine tastings and you can get a complimentary photo with Santa in the Five Spice lobby.
